25 years since the mass protests and storming of the National Assembly

Today marks the 25th anniversary of the siege of the building of the National Assembly in Sofia during the mass protests against the government of the Bulgarian Socialist Party, which led to the fall of Zhan Videnov's government. The culmination was on the night of January 10, 1997, when thousands of citizens stormed parliament and some MPs barricaded themselves. The country remained blocked until February 4th when the Bulgarian Socialist Party returned its mandate and an agreement was reached for early parliamentary elections.

On the same day in front of the Saint Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Sofia, a "rally of victory"  was held, led by opposition leader and future Prime Minister Ivan Kostov.
