The United States support the efforts of the governments of Bulgaria and North Macedonia to work with the EU in order to resolve bilateral issues. This was what BNT learned from a written response of the US Embassy in Sofia.
The occasion was an interview of Gabriel Escobar, US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State in charge of the Western Balkans with the Voice of America Radio. Journalists asked Escobar whether the US Embassy in Sofia and the Bulgarian government were working to address the issues of the "Macedonian minority" in the country. The diplomat answered the question should be addressed to the US Embassy in Sofia.
The embassy said the interview gave rise to misconceptions about US policy in the region and that the US government had not raised questions about the aforementioned minority issues to the Bulgarian government.
