The Omicron wave is now peaking in Eastern Europe. The same thing happened in Western Europe some 2 to 3 weeks ago, Bulgaria’s Chief State Health Inspector Associate Professor Angel Kunchev said for the BNT. In his view, the number of new Covid-19 cases will continue to surge.

One of the worst qualities of the Omicron variant is that it partially managed to evade vaccines’ protection. Vaccine effectiveness against the Omicron variant fell significantly to 50%-70%. However, the effectiveness of the booster shot against Omicron is higher- 70%-80%, Angel Kunchev went on to say. The Omicron variant will perhaps end the coronavirus pandemic. After the summer of 2022, it could end up being a seasonal variant, like flu, Associate Professor Kunchev added.
