On 20 January the Bulgarian Orthodox Church celebrates the Day of Bulgarian Patriarch St. Euthymius of Turnovo, one of the most prominent 14th century Bulgarians and last head of the Turnovo Patriarchate. Euthymius was born around 1327. At an early age he became a monk at Kilifarevo monastery and became a follower of prominent hesychast Theodosius of Turnovo.
In 1371 Euthymius founded the Holy Trinity monastery in Turnovo which was to develop into a hub of the Turnovo literary school. In 1375 he was elected Patriarch. After Turnovo fell to the Ottomans he was exiled for his defence of Orthodoxy. Euthymius died in 1401.One of the most revered holidays for Muslims, Kurban Bayrami (Eid al-Adha), has begun.
