Prison staff organized protests all over the country today to demand higher salaries and the appointment of additional staff. “For 13 years we have had the same demands,” said Emil Velkov, chairperson of the Central Sofia Prison TU association.

“Once more we are being lied to about the wage indexing, the facilities are lousy, we are understaffed even though there are job vacancies,” said on his part a protester employed at the Veliko Turnovo remand centre.

Representatives of the protesters are expected to meet with the senior management of the Ministry of Justice today.
