Actors are getting ready for large-scale protests at the beginning of autumn over cuts in the budget for culture, Hristo Mutafchiev, chairperson of the Union of Actors in Bulgaria has announced. In his words, the update of the state budget has cut the funding of the sector by 1.4 million Leva (EUR 716,000). However, Hristo Mutafchiev is demanding a starting monthly salary of 1,500 Leva (EUR 767) for people employed in performing arts, as well as more funding for culture.

“Our idea is for shows throughout the country to start 30 minutes later, during which time the actors will mingle with the audience at the central entrances of theatres and tell the public why they are protesting,” Hristo Mutafchiev said.
