The Supreme Administrative Court upheld the decision of the Administrative Court - Varna of January 2022, which revoked the declination of the Regional Inspectorate for Environment and Water-Varna regarding the prosecting and extraction of natural gas on the territory of Dobrich district.

Dobrich district is located in Dobrudzha, a region often referred to as the "breadbasket of Bulgaria". In a local referendum in 2017, nearly 97% of voters opposed the extraction of natural gas. More than 52% of the local residents participated in the referendum which was preceded by mass protests against gas extraction.
