Bulgaria marks 145 years since the epic battles at Shipka Peak

Today, Bulgaria celebrates the 145th anniversary of the Shipchka Peak epic battles known as the Shipka epopee. The culmination of the celebrations is in front of the Freedom Monument on Mount Shipka. In the hot August days of 1877, in the heroic battles at Shipka Peak, the outcome of the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878 was determined.

After a 2-year break due to the pandemic, historical reenactments will be held again. At the top, the battles of 1877 will be reenacted and moments from the national celebration in 1934, when the Freedom Monument was opened, will come to life, BNR correspondent Velina Mahlebashieva reports. 

The celebrations, which are being held under the patronage of the head of state Rumen Radev, will be attended by Vice President Iliana Iotova.
