A zebra was born in the Sofia Zoo for the first time in 30 years, the director of the zoo Dobromir Borislavov said. He recalled that in 2020 the Sofia Zoo received a herd of three female and one male Chapman’s zebras from the Berlin Zoo.
The zookeepers called the newborn zebra Mickey, although it is a boy. This species of zebra are native to the savannah of north-east South Africa. Its population is now in decline because of human factors such as poaching and farming. This species cannot be domesticated. The zebras get used to the keeper’s presence, but physical contact is very rare, Dobromir Borislavov said for the BTA.
