The quality of the road network in this country is close to bottom of the list of European countries. Almost half of the 21,000 kilometres of roads in the country are now in poor condition. The disparity between the way in which roads in the country are designed and the increased truck loads and the technological innovations in car manufacturing has been growing. Such were the conclusions drawn at a seminar on The state of and the challenges to the road infrastructure in Bulgaria, organized by the Bulgarian Branch Chamber Roads. According to the experts, what is needed is a systemic approach and more frequent repairs of the road network. Its disrepair increases the risk of traffic accidents, BNR’s Mila Mladenova reports.

The state is the principal investor in road construction in this country.
