Birdwatching, or the observation of birds in their natural environment, has been becoming an increasingly popular type of tourism in Bulgaria, Petar Yankov, one of the most famous ornithologists in this country, has told BTA. Decades ago, birdwatching in Bulgaria provoked the interest mainly of British tourists, then they were joined by Dutch, Scandinavian and German tourists, and later by many Bulgarians.

Bulgaria is an important destination for birdwatching tourism - one of the top five in Europe, thanks to the variety of birds, some of which are not found in other European countries. Despite its relatively small territory, the country is inhabited by over 420 species of birds. The most suitable places for this type of tourism are the regions of Burgas and Madzharovo in the Eastern Rhodopes.
