The Bulgarian National Radio now offers up-to-date information from and about Bulgaria in Romanian. The website "Radio Bulgaria in Romanian" complements the rich portfolio of media services of Bulgaria’s public-service radio. With it, the number of languages in which the BNR communicates with the world reaches 11.
The dissemination of reliable, accurate and fast information is the mission of the Bulgarian National Radio, as the new webpage of the media in the Romanian language appears at a time when the two neighbouring countries - Bulgaria and Romania - stand together in their common goals on the threshold of Schengen. Through the Romanian-language content, full information coverage will be provided from Bulgaria to all its neighbouring countries in the Balkans.
The official presentation of Radio Bulgaria's Romanian webpage will take place at 3 pm today at the central offices of the BNR in Sofia. During the event, the editorial team will be presented, which will provide the Romanian-speaking audience with interesting information about tourism, culture, history, traditions and lifestyle in Bulgaria, as well as news about national and international events and processes, politics, topics of bilateral and regional interest, useful tips for travelling in Bulgaria and meetings with prominent Bulgarian personalities and people who connected their lives with the two neighbouring countries.
86 years after the launch of the BNR programmes for international audiences the development of the BNR’s foreign service, Radio Bulgaria, is becoming increasingly dynamic. In 2021, Radio Bulgaria resumed its daily radio broadcasts in foreign languages in the form of a podcast (in English, French, German, Spanish, Russian, Greek, Serbian, Turkish, Albanian), which is why on January 25, 2022 Radio Bulgaria received the grand prize of the Bulgarian National Radio – the Sirak Skitnik award.
From October 3, 2022, one can listen to the only news and music programme of its kind for Bulgarians around the world – the "Bulgaria Today" podcast offered on all weekdays at the BNR website. As of November 1 this year a new project entitled "Radio album of Bulgarian communities around the world" is about to be launched, the ambition of which is, through the power of radio, to "arrange in an album” the history of Bulgarians abroad with their institutions, personalities and community initiatives.
The multilingual family of Radio Bulgaria is now joined by the team of the new website of the BNR in Romanian language, composed of two journalists and one editor - Iulia Bahovski, Vladimir Mitev and Alexandru Ionaşcu.
Iulia Bahovski was born in Romania, graduated from the Faculty of Journalism at the University of St. Kliment Ohridski in Sofia. Her academic training is complemented by practical business skills acquired during her 15 years of experience with Bulgarian and Romanian companies. Her work as a consultant has helped the start-up and development of businesses and the improvement of Bulgarian-Romanian relations and investments. She is the founder of MyRo.Biz, an online media, portal for Bulgarians and Bulgarian businesses in Romania. There is also a "mirror" site in Romanian - for Romanian business and investment opportunities in Bulgaria (MyBG.Biz).
Vladimir Mitev graduated in International Relations and Iranian Studies at the University of St. Kliment Ohridski. He accumulated his journalistic experience in the magazine "Tema", as his professional interests are mainly related to the Near and Middle East and Romania. In 2015, he created his own bilingual blog in Bulgarian and Romanian (https://movafaq.wordpress.com/). As a journalist speaking and writing in the Romanian language, he is a sought-after interviewee of a number of Romanian media, and is a frequent guest on the BNR's national Horizon program on foreign policy topics.
Alexandru Ionaşcu is a doctor of philology, with a dissertation on Romanian and English literature ("Monstruos and Monstrosity in 19th-century English Literature and 20th-century Romanian Literature"), he has published articles and studies in various academic journals and anthologies, he has participated in numerous national and international conferences and colloquiums and has a very good knowledge of language and literature.
Why does the BNR start “speaking” to its audience in Romanian, as well?
Bulgaria and Romania maintain active cooperation in the commercial and economic spheres, they are partners along the lines of NATO and the EU, at the level of Southeast Europe, the Danube and the Black Sea region. The two neighbouring countries share similar interests and have common projects in the fields of infrastructure, energy, transport, etc. Tourist and cultural interactions between the two peoples are expanding more and more. According to data from the Ministry of Tourism, in the three years before the Covid-19 pandemic, an average of over 1,200, 000 Romanian citizens annually travelled to Bulgaria for the purpose of tourism. At the same time, a huge flow of Romanian passengers transit through our country, whose final destinations are Greece, Turkey or countries of Central and Western Europe. All of them are the intended audience of the BNR website in Romanian. In the future, the Romanian textual content will be complemented by up-to-date audio and video formats.
