A 5-day international conference on the conservation of ancient mosaics started today in Plovdiv. According to the International Committee for the Conservation of Mosaics (ICCM), more than 200 experts from 35 countries, most of them coming from countries located on the territory of the ancient Roman Empire, will meet in the second largest Bulgarian city.

In fact, the Bishop's Basilica of ancient Philippopolis (the old name of Plovdiv), belongs to this tradition. The basilica is the largest early Christian temple in Bulgaria and is quite impressive with its with its 2,000 square meters of ancient multi-coloured mosaics preserved in two layers.

The conference, which will take place until 28 October, is an important step towards the inclusion of Plovdiv's mosaic heritage on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
