Bulgarian Parliament adopts new mechanism for calculating country's minimum wage

Photo: Archive

The majority in the Bulgarian parliament has adopted at first reading that the minimum wage in Bulgaria should be no less than 50 percent of the gross average salary for the country for the period of twelve months preceding its determination. Currently, this would mean a minimum amount of BGN 850 (€425).

The changes to the Labour Code proposed by the Bulgarian Socialist Party received the support of 175 MPs, with three abstaining. The final decision must be voted on within seven days.

According to its proponents, the purpose of the draft law is to promptly tie the amount of the minimum wage to the reference values under the directive of the EP and the Council for minimum wages in the EU in the conditions of high inflation, low incomes and constantly rising costs of living.

Some MPs warn that if the minimum wages are not raised now,  a much larger increase will be required later, which will make it difficult for employers.
