One of the most beloved Bulgarian performers, Poli Genova, is among the most successful artists in Bulgaria. She has been on stage since she was a young child - as part of the children's vocal group Bon-Bon, and later with the teen trio LaTiDa. Polly is the most streamed artist on Bulgarian air in 2021 with her hits Last Night and No More. In 2016, she came fourth in the Eurovision Song Contest. The song If Love Was a Crime, which she performed then, became a European hit.
A few days ago, her new album A Better Christmas was released. It consists of 10 Christmas songs, some of which are duets with famous Bulgarian pop singers such as Orlin Goranov, Lubo Kirov, Orlin Pavlov and Preya, who took part in the album launch concert.
Poli told Radio Bulgaria that in recent years she has happily divided her time between music and taking care of her family and two children.
"Christmas isn't the same, it's a better Christmas," says the beloved singer, "Really my life is so different, so much more meaningful, so much more wonderful since having kids. I am reliving with them this wonderful holiday, so special for all of us Christians who celebrate the Nativity. I am eternally grateful for all that I have in my life, for all the loved ones who are by my side and inspire me every day to write music, to create - it makes sense to leave something behind, to look to the future. In my family we love the Christmas holidays. My husband is not Bulgarian, he lived in a completely different culture and he is always interested in how many traditions we have for these holidays. For example, the special meal on Christmas Eve, which is always lean, with an odd number of dishes. He very much appreciates the fact that we observe the traditions, and I can safely say that part of him has already become Bulgarian.
"This album has been very, very much wanted for a long time. It took me and Jordan Mitov from my team years to work on it. We love Christmas very much and we always wanted to do something different, something that would stay - new Bulgarian music related to these wonderful holidays. The whole creative team working on the project is fantastic - starting with Borislav Boyadzhiev-Borche, who has been the musical director of all my projects so far. He did almost all the arrangements. Most of the songs are by his brother Rumen Boyadzhiev and the lyrics are by Daniela Kuzmanova, their mother, someone I've worked with since early childhood. There are also foreign authors who are part of the successful team that has worked with me in recent years, people I trust.
All the songs on the album are very close to my heart, they all make me feel excited and evoke different emotions, but at the moment my particular favourite is "Falling Star", whose lyrics were written by Elena Sirakova - an extremely talented young lady, who also wrote some of the vocal arrangements, along with the other two backing vocalists. There is no greater happiness than having such a wonderful team and being able to make music together live."
Polly Genova invited her Bulgarian fans to see and hear the recording at the album's concert presentation on 26 December on one of the national TV channels. And to all the friends of Radio Bulgaria she wished bright and happy holidays, good health and a more positive outlook on the world around us!
