Bulgaria is experiencing an early flu outbreak. The incidence of influenza is increasing rapidly in some areas of Bulgaria. The regional crisis headquarters in Burgas declared an epidemic today and tomorrow it is expected to be declared for Pazardzhik. Cases are also increasing in Varna, Lovech and Shumen. Incidence rate in Sofia is relatively low.

Within two weeks the influenza epidemic will spread throughout the country. This was stated by the Chief State Health Inspector Dr. Angel Kunchev at a briefing. The flu comes a week or two earlier than in previous years.  Co-circulation of two strains - Victoria and Darwin - is reported.

Anti-epidemic measures are introduced in health care facilities - immunisations are postponed, no visitors are allowed in hospitals, public events where large numbers of people gather are also restricted.
