The country's population as of September 7, 2021, according to Census 2021 data, is 6 519 789. Women are 3 383 527 (51.9%) and men 3 136 262 (48.1%).
73.3% of the population lives in urban areas and 19.5% in Sofia city and district.
There is a continuing process of demographic ageing - the share of the population aged 65 and over is increasing. The number of males predominates in the age groups up to 44 years. The share of the population in the active age group (15-64) is the highest in Sofia (capital city) district - 65.8% of the district's population.
