The European Commission has announced that it is bringing claims against Bulgaria and Slovakia before the Court of Justice of the EU for the imposition of fines because they have not introduced into their national legislation the European rules for energy from renewable sources - RES.

EU countries had until June 30, 2021 to implement the rules. Bulgaria and Slovakia have so far not announced any measures to change their legislation. The Commission has already taken criminal proceedings against all 27 EU countries for not reporting the measures.

The rules adopted in 2018 set a mandatory goal for at least 32% of energy to be produced from RES by 2030

According to Eurostat, in 2020, Bulgaria produced 22% of its used energy from RES and has met the required intermediate level.
