221 pro-Moscow troops were killed and more than 300 wounded in Bakhmut, Serhiy Cherevatyi, a Ukrainian military spokesperson, said. Russia's defence ministry said that up to 210 Ukrainian soldiers were killed in the broader Donetsk part of the frontline. Reuters notes that these statements have not been confirmed by an independent source.

Yevgeny Prigozhin leader of the Russian mercenary group Wagner said in a video posted on messaging app Telegram that his forces were near the center of Bakhmut. In the footage, Prigozhin is seen standing on the rooftop of a high-rise building in what is said to be Bakhmut.

"This is the building of the town administration, this is the centre of the town," Prigozhin said in the video, pointing towards a building in the distance.

"It is one kilometer and two hundred meters away," said Prigozhin, who was clad in full military gear.

Russian forces continue to attack Bakhmut, but have not made any confirmed advances within Bakhmut on March 11, the US-based Institute for the Study of War reports. Wagner Group fighters are likely becoming increasingly pinned in urban areas, such as the AZOM industrial complex, and are therefore finding it difficult to make significant advances.

Ukraine's foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba told the Bild am Sonntag newspaper that ammunition shortages were the "number one" problem in Ukraine's attempt to repel Russia's invasion. Mr Kuleba said his country would continue to defend Bakhmut and called on Germany to send more ammunition and start training Ukrainian pilots.
