If there are sanctions on countries that use Russian nuclear fuel, there should also be sanctions on those that consume large quantities of gas from Russia, as well as those that still have companies operating on Russian territory and have otherwise benefited from their relations with Russia, Bulgaria’s caretaker Minister of Energy Rosen Hristov said for BTA regarding the opinion of the German Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action Robert Habeck, who called for sanctions on countries using Russian nuclear fuel. In Minister Hristov's words, “Habeck's statement is political and highly unacceptable for Bulgaria”.

In February, President Rumen Radev said that Bulgaria would veto possible European sanctions on Russia in the field of nuclear energy, because the country has an NPP using Russian technology and is currently dependent on Russian nuclear fuel.
