Hundreds of believers are set to go to the historic hill Tsarevets in Bulgaria’s old capital Veliko Tarnovo, where, under the open skies, they will welcome the Holy Fire to the sound of the city’s church bells.
An Easter service will take place on top of Tsarevets hill, reenacting church service from the time of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom, the local authorities say. And once the Holy Fire is taken out, there will be a traditional torch procession from the fortress to the cathedral of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary where a holy liturgy of the resurrection will be held. Consecrated eggs and kozunak will be handed out to the public in front of Tsarevets fortress and the Resurrection of Jesus church.
On Easter Sunday there will be a festive programme, animations in Marno Pole Park, and a concert by the folklore ensemble Iskra in front of city hall. The Sound and Light audiovisual show starts at 9 PM in front of Tsarevets fortress.
