Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovakia had reached a deal in principle to allow the transit of Ukrainian agricultural products to resume, European Commission Vice President Valdis Dombrovskis was quoted as saying by BNR correspondent in Brussels Angelina Piskova. The 5 member-states had vetoed imports from Ukraine until June 5.

The Commission will propose unspecified emergency safeguard measures for wheat, corn, rapeseed and sunflower production. For their part, the five Eastern European countries will lift their vetoes on imports of other products from Ukraine. As compensation, they will receive European aid amounting to EUR 100 million. Again, it is not clear exactly how these funds will be distributed.

EU's permanent representatives have agreed to extend duty-free imports from Ukraine, which expire on 5 June, for another year.

Consultancy UkrAgroConsult estimates that in 2021-2022 the share of sunflower exports from Ukraine on the world market will reach 45-46%.
