Protests for higher salaries in the public sector continue

For a second day, protesters from the Confederation of Independent Trade Unions (CITUB) in Bulgaria temporarily blocked traffic in the region of parliament building in Sofia.

They are protesting against the way the police wanted to remove the protesters from the area of the service entrance of the National Assembly. Later, MPs from the majority in parliament came out to meet the protesters who are from the public sector. CITUB chief economist Lyubomir Kostov stated that the package of 170 million Leva (EUR 85 million) which the TUs want to be allocated for raising salaries in the public sector is not going to push up the budget deficit, and that the MPs are going to approve them. The budget deficit set down in the state budget for 2023 is 5-6 billion Leva (EUR 2.5-3 billion).

The trade union protests will continue on 14 July. Trade unionists are expected to hold meetings with the individual parliamentary groups.
