The Bulgarian Nuclear Regulatory Agency has started the process for licensing the new American nuclear fuel for Unit V of the Kozloduy NPP, the agency reports. An application has already been submitted requesting a permit to use a new type of Westinghouse-produced RWFA nuclear fuel in the 1,000-megawatt Unit 5.

The agency is yet to check whether all the necessary documents have been submitted, as well as whether they meet the legal requirements.

The delivery of the first cassettes with nuclear fuel is planned for April 2024 and the first filling should take place a month later, provided that the Nuclear Regulatory Agency has issued a license, Minister of Energy Rumen Radev announced.
