International Beer Day is celebrated every first Friday in August, with its beginning in the United States in 2007. This year, the holiday is on August 4, reports Bulgaria's National Institute of Statistics.

According to data, the consumption of beer in Bulgaria has been steadily increasing over the years - if in 2015 the average consumption per person was 21.7 liters, then in 2022 it reached 24.7 liters, with a sharp peak observed only in the pre-pandemic year 2019, when an average of 25 litres of beer was poured per person.

By quarters, according to NSI data, the highest consumption is from July to September - 7.8 litres per person, and the lowest from January to March - 4.5 litres.

The first brewery in Bulgaria was opened shortly before or around the Liberation of Bulgaria from the Ottoman rule in 1878, as a Czech master brewer worked in it. It was located in Bulgaria's town of Ruse on the Danube River and bore the name of Saint Petka.
