Bulgaria is marking146 years since the epic battles at Shipka peak with various initiatives. One of the most heroic and decisive battles during the Russo-Turkish War of Independence in 1877-1878 was for the battle for the Shipka Pass in the Balkan Range. The battles fought in August 1877 between the defenders of the pass and the Turkish army entered Bulgarian history under the name of the Shipchka epopee.

At 11 a.m. on Mount Shipka, the Bulgarian President and Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, Rumen Radev, will receive the line-up of the representative companies of the National Guard unit, lay a wreath in front of the Freedom Monument and pay tribute to the memory of those who died for the Liberation of Bulgaria.

From 12:00 and 13:00 there will be reenactments of the Battle at the Eagle's Nest.

A number of hiking trips are also planned in honour of the anniversary.
