Criminologists from Plovdiv and the prosecutor’s office have broken up a criminal group of medical specialists who siphoned off money from the National Health Insurance Fund using false documents for technical aids for persons with disabilities.
Seven people have been arrested, including five doctors and the organizer of the fraudulent scheme. 5 million Leva (EUR 2.6 million) has been embezzled since July 2022. For the purpose, a sham medical centre Medlife was used to collect data about persons with disabilities, fake protocols with their names were prepared, and the money for the expensive technical aids stolen. The perpetrators went to numerous care homes for seniors and for persons with disabilities to collect their personal data, including by bribes, in the guise of commission payments to the heads of the homes.
