Archaeologists uncovered a Roman pagan temple in the area of Orpheus’ sanctuary near the village of Tatul. It dates to the 3rd-4th century. They came across the temple during excavations of an early Christian church. According to the head of excavations, Professor Nikolai Ovcharov, the temple was very large - measuring approximately 10 by 11 meters, with a monumental entrance from the west. The temple’s threshold is preserved.
Immediately after the conversion to Christianity, which took place in the Eastern Rhodopes at the end of the 4th and the beginning of the 5th century, the old pagan temple was demolished and a single-nave Christian basilica was built there.
