Miners and energy workers continue roadblocks

Trakia motorway, the Pass of the Republic and road section in the region of Gurkovo of the Sofia-Burgas road south of the Balkan Range remain closed to traffic.

The protesting miners and energy workers from Maritsa Iztok coal mine are adamant they will keep the roads closed until the government withdraws the territorial plans for the just transition of the coal mining areas submitted to the European institutions.

“It is not the plans that are closing down the power plants, as they imagine. The plans are there to help when the market shuts down the plants, when they will not be able to work because there is cheaper electricity coming from other sources,” Prime Minister Niklay Denkov said. He once again invited the protesters to come to the Council of Ministers, so an “in-depth discussion” can take place, as many of them do not comprehend the substance of the plans and how they can help them.
