Miners and energy workers continue to protest

Miners and energy workers from Maritsa East coal mines continue to block Trakia motorway, the Pass of the Republic and the road section in the region of Gurkovo of the Sofia-Burgas road south of the Balkan Range.

Road blockades remain in place, although the National Assembly adopted on Friday night Bulgaria’s climate neutrality roadmap, according to which the production of electricity from coal will continue without limit until the end of 2038. Protesters still insist that the government withdraws the territorial just transition plans from the European institutions.

Late last night the protesting miners and energy workers did not have a unified position on how the protest should continue. Trade unionists are expected to go to them to explain how they accept the parliamentary decision and whether these are actually the specific actions they want to see from the state.
