For the first time in Bulgaria, a wireless pacemaker was implanted directly into the right ventricle of the heart through the femoral vein. The two-hour operation was performed by Assoc. Prof. Vasil Velchev and Dr. Nikolay Bonev from the Cardiology Clinic of the St. Anna University Hospital in Sofia with the assistance of Consultant Professor dr. Przemyslaw Wiktorski. Two patients (a 67-year-old man and a 72-year-old woman) were the first in Bulgaria to receive this state-of-the-art treatment. The pacemakers implanted for the first time in Bulgarian patients are made by an American company.
