Ten-metre Christmas tree in front of St Alexander Nevsky brings festive spirit to the capital

The mayor of Sofia, Vasil Terziev, switched on the lights of a ten-metre tall Christmas tree in front of St Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. "Christmas is that special time of the year when our homes radiate a glow of comfort and warmth, peace and hope," said the new mayor.

Before the tree was lit, children's dance and music groups put on a heart-warming show for people who had come to watch the ceremony. There was an interactive "Lumini" performance with glowing fairy puppets.

Of course, Santa Claus was in the square to greet the children and their parents and pose for photos.

For the first time, a Christmas tree was erected in the newly-designated pedestrian zone around St Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and St Sophia temple. Throughout December, the square hosts Christmas concerts and other events for residents and visitors.
