According to a study that is carried out every 4 years, illegal logging brings hidden income of more than 50 million euros per year. Separately, forests cannot perform their water protection, consolidation and environmental protection functions and whole areas remain without clean air and water.
There is illegal logging even in three of Bulgaria's national parks - "Rila", "Pirin" and "Central Balkan", environmentalists warn. Firewood accounts for the largest share of illegal logging. That is why WWF encourages a gradual transition to a low-carbon economy.
