Second arrest in connection with corruption scandal at Ministry of Sports

A second person has been arrested at the Ministry of Youth and Sports in connection with the ongoing corruption scandal, the prosecutor’s office told the BNR. According to information the BNR has been given, the man arrested is weightlifting Olympic champion and current coach of Bulgaria’s national team Ivan Ivanov. His son, who is an expert at the ministry, was arrested in the process of receiving a bribe yesterday.

According to the prosecutor’s office, the President of the Bulgarian Weightlifting Federation Arif Majed was supposed to pay a bribe of 62,000 Leva that would provide 1.2 million Leva (EUR 614,000) for organizing the European championship next year and for ensuring further payments to the federation will not be discontinued.
