Bulgaria’s Minister of Justice Atanas Slavov believes that the new text in the Constitution, which allows people with dual citizenship to be elected as MPs, should be refined. In an interview for Nova News Minister Slavov said that the text would be clearer if it explicitly regulated the hypothesis of Bulgarian citizenship by birth and second citizenship.
According to him, MPs should be able to have second citizenship from allied countries and partners and not from such that declare Bulgaria as a hostile country. In Atanas Slavov’s words, the issue of dual citizenship is important because a quarter of Bulgarians are living abroad. ''We need to find a way to include them in political life. Maybe this is such an attempt'', Minister Slavov said, adding that he was not involved in the drafting of these texts and that they were drafted in the National Assembly.
