Dangerous levels of pollution in 11 cities after New Year celebrations

On the first day of the New Year, the concentration of particulate matter in Sofia is twice the permitted level. According to the European Air Quality Index, the pollution is a health hazard in 11 cities in the country. 

The main reasons why people in so many parts of Bulgaria are finding it hard to breathe today are the lack of wind and the fog. Last but not least, the firecrackers, fireworks and other pyrotechnics used by Bulgarians to celebrate the New Year have also contributed to the pollution.
