Sofia on the brink of a garbage crisis, inspection warns

Photo: BTA, archive

Sofia is at risk of a waste crisis in the next three years unless urgent measures are taken. This is the conclusion of an inspection of the Waste Treatment Distribution Company by its new management, which took over at the end of November.

According to the new management, the plant is producing twice as little refuse-derived fuel (RDF), obtained by processing municipal solid waste (MSW), which is of poor quality. The quality of the RDF is also poor, so there is no demand for it.

The landfill cells are filling up faster than planned, which could lead to a garbage crisis in 2-3 years.  Mayor Vasil Terziev has ordered an internal audit to examine the overall condition of the plant.
