At the meeting of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe taking place until January 26, a new commissioner for human rights is to be elected. The shortlist of candidates includes former Bulgarian European Commissioner Meglena Kuneva.

Kuneva's competitors are Manfred Nowak from Austria and Michael O'Flaherty from Ireland. The new holder of the position will take office on 1 April 2024, at the end of the current term of Commissioner Dunja Mijatović's. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs points out that Bulgaria is putting forward for the first time its own candidate for a senior position in the Council of Europe.

At the beginning of 2007, Kuneva became Bulgaria's first European Commissioner in charge of consumer protection.
