Environment Minister: Offshore wind farms in the mid-2030s at the earliest

Wind power plants in the sea spaces will be built in the middle of the next decade at the earliest, Bulgaria's Minister of Environment and Water Julian Popov told BNT.

Not long ago, the parliament passed a bill on renewable energy in the seas at first reading, and this provoked the reaction of the fishermen of the Northern Black Sea coast, who threatened to strike.

"I want to reassure all the fishermen and the tourist businesses that nothing will happen at their expense," said the minister. He explained that the planned construction of wind power plants is a good idea in principle, but he does not see a serious prospect for offshore wind energy before the end of the current decade. The technology needs to be developed and go through complex public consultations.

Julian Popov assured that no one will allow one industry to be destroyed at the expense of another.
