Activists form Vazrazhdane blocked Yolvkovo border checkpoint with Romania over Thursday’s decision by the Constitutional Court, which ruled against the holding of a referendum for keeping the Bulgarian Lev until 2043. The Court rejected the request by 49 MPs to find parliament’s decision not to allow the holding of the referendum unconstitutional.Constitutional

Vazrazhdane leader Kostadin Kostadinov stated that the protests would continue every week at different locations, and without advance notification. He said the Constitution and the will of 604,000 Bulgarians had been trampled on. Earlier today, representatives of Vazrazhdane also blocked the border checkpoints at Lesovo and Kalotina.

The Interior Ministry has stated that the roadblocks by Vazrazhdane at border crossing are unauthorized, and urged the party to abide by the law on assemblies and rallies. “In view of the disruption of the usual rhythm of work and the disturbance of the peace, the police reserve the right to take steps to prevent and not allow any subsequent unlawful acts of this kind,” the Interior Ministry says.
