US diplomat: Bulgaria has made good progress in the fight against corruption

Significant progress has been made in the fight against corruption, Andrea Brouillette-Rodriguez, Deputy Chief of Mission at the US Embassy in Sofia, said at the start of a forum on "Strategies to Safeguard Against Corruption Vulnerabilities at the Municipal Level".

Ms Brouillette recalled that the Parliament had legislated to protect whistleblowers, introduced accountability for the Prosecutor General and reformed the Anti-Corruption Commission. I hope the public will feel the positive impact of these changes. There have also been changes at the local level. The aim, as the diplomat said, is to increase trust between local authorities and citizens.

Prevention is more important than cure - it is better to have an anti-corruption system than a sanction. For prevention to work, there should be clear legislation, public appointment procedures and public procurement, Justice Minister Atanas Slavov told the forum.
