The number of attempts to cross the Bulgarian-Turkish border illegally has significantly decreased by about 80% compared to last year. This was revealed during a visit to Bulgaria by Frontex Executive Director Hans Leijtens to the Kapitan Andreevo BCP. Interior Minister Kalin Stoyanov accompanied Mr Leijtens on his first visit to the Bulgarian-Turkish border.

"The migrant pressure is under control," Stoyanov asserted. In response, Hans Lejtens said: "Bulgaria is a very important partner for us, without Bulgaria we cannot protect the external borders of the EU".

It was announced that the number of European Agency staff on the Bulgarian-Turkish border will be tripled to almost 500. They will work together with the Bulgarian border police, reports BNR correspondent Daniela Kostova. Technical equipment, including 360 off-road vehicles, will also be sent. Stoyanov thanked the agency for its assistance to the Bulgarian border guards.

At a short ceremony, Minister Stoyanov announced the official reopening of the Bolyarovo border police station on the border with Turkey.
