The President of Bulgaria Rumen Radev has selected the President of the National Audit Office Dimitar Glavchev as candidate for prime minister of the caretaker cabinet, the Presidency has announced.

Later today, President Radev will meet with Dimitar Glavchev to task him with proposing a composition of a caretaker government. Before President Radev made his choice, GERB leader Boyko Borissov stated he hoped the president would not pick Glavchev for caretaker prime minister, as he is connected with GERB.

Dimitar Glavchev has been MP from GERB party in 6 parliaments, and in 2017 he was President of the 44th National Assembly for several months. In June, 2023 the 49th National Assembly elected Dimitar Glavchev President of the National Audit Office.

According to the latest amendments to the Constitution, approved by parliament at the end of 2023 with the support of We Continue the Change/Democratic Bulgaria (PP/DB), GERB and the Movement for Rights and Freedoms, the president can choose the caretaker prime minister from among 10 persons: the president of the National Assembly, the governor and the deputy governors of the Bulgarian National Bank, the president and the vice presidents of the National Audit Office, and the ombudsman or a deputy ombudsman. At the moment, most of these positions are occupied by representatives of GERB.
