Bulgaria's forests are in excellent condition, outgoing Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Eng. Miroslav Marinov told the media. He was speaking in Sliven at the opening of Forest week, which is themed "Forest means Life and... shared responsibility".

"Forest growth in Bulgaria has doubled in the last 60 years. It has increased both in area and in volume," said Mr Marinov. In the last 145 years, 18 million hectares (4,447,890 acres) of forest have been planted in Bulgaria. 56% of the forest area is part of the EU's Natura 2000 network of protected areas. We are third in Europe in terms of protected areas and second in terms of biodiversity," the outgoing minister added.

"This year we are celebrating the 99th edition of the Week of the Forest, a professional day of the forestry community," Marinov said, stressing that this year's motto was determined by a vote of Bulgarian citizens.
