Municipal councilor and member of the Traffic Safety Commission of the Sofia Municipal Council, Blagovest Georgiev, was involved in a road accident last night and tried to escape from the scene of the accident, BNR reporter Nikolay Hristov reported. However, he was stopped by a police team a few blocks from the incident.

The case refers to a minor traffic accident between two cars on the capital's Dragan Tsankov boulevard.

The councilor had apparently consumed alcohol, informs BGNES. He refused to give a sample for alcohol and drugs.

In a statement to the media, the municipal councilors from "We Continue the Change" and the Executive Council of the party defined Blagovest Georgiev's behavior as unacceptable, adding that they will accept his resignation without hesitation.

For his part, Sofia mayor Vasil Terziev wrote on his Facebook profile that the rules and laws should apply equally to everyone and demanded the resignation of the councillor.
