Elections 2024

Bulgarians show decreased enthusiasm for the European vote, expect the EU to defend peace

Tired of the three years of ongoing political crisis with endless repetition of parliamentary elections, Bulgarians are not enthusiastic about the European elections. Their willingness to participate is lower compared to 2019. This ranks the country next to Estonia as countries showing decreased interest.

In 2019, 57% of Bulgarian voters were ready to vote for the European Parliament. Now, 50% of those eligible are ready to vote for MEPs on 9 June, according to a Eurobarometer survey.

37% of the Bulgarians surveyed believe that things in the EU are not going in a good direction, for 55% things are going in the wrong direction. 22% think the direction of the Community is right.

Bulgarians, unlike most Europeans, see the European Parliament as a tool to solve problems that their own politicians and rulers cannot solve.

47% point to "Peace" as the value the EU should defend.

One in three Bulgarians - 33% - point to "Respect for national identities, cultures and traditions in EU member states". 27% point to "Solidarity between member states and between its regions", as well as "Freedom of movement".  "The rule of law" was chosen by 26% of the Bulgarians surveyed.
