The caretaker cabinet has provided almost 80 million Leva (EUR 40 million) in additional funding for salaries for public universities, the government press service has announced.
The two decrees for granting funding, a commitment assumed by caretaker PM Dimitar Glavchev during talks with the Council of Rectors and the trade unions, have already been approved by the government. The money for raising the salaries of the academic staff and the employees at public universities was transferred to the accounts of the universities on Friday. Salaries will be raised in 33 public higher educational establishments. A meeting at the Ministry of Education and Science with representatives of the Council of Rectors and of the TUs on 21 May is to discuss how exactly the money will be distributed among the universities, the Bulgarian news agency BTA reports. Nevertheless, on Monday, 20 May, many public and private universities will remain closed.
