NSI: The number of Bulgarians moving abroad in 2023 was be the lowest in the last 10 years

Bulgaria has an unprecedented mechanical growth of international migration

More than 150 thousand Bulgarians living abroad returned home between 2014 and 2023. In the same period, almost 220 thousand chose to migrate abroad. According to the National Statistical Institute, in 10 years, 68 thousand people have left the country as a result of emigration. 

The number of Bulgarians moving abroad in 2023 was be the lowest in the last 10 years. However, the number of foreigners from non-EU countries who have settled in Bulgaria has doubled. Thanks to this, the country has experienced an unprecedented mechanical growth of international migration. 

Last year, 56 807 people from abroad settled in the country. 15 227 people left the country, 11 386 of them Bulgarians. The largest shares of inward migration came from Turkey (25%), Ukraine (17.5%) and the Russian Federation (9.7%).
