NSI: Bulgaria shrank by 8 sq. km. in two years

The territory of Bulgaria has decreased slightly in the last two years, according to the National Statistical Institute (NSI). 

As of December 31, 2023, the territory of the country calculated by the NSI on the basis of digital models of the cadastral map was 110 996,76 sq. km. 

In 2022, when NSI first published its own calculations of the country's territory the results showed that the territory of Bulgaria by 31 December 2021 was 110 996,84 sq km.
 
According to their purpose, the largest share of the country's total area is occupied by agricultural land - 54.5 per cent and forests - 33.3 per cent. Urbanized land accounts for 5,279.4 sq. km, or 4.8% of the country. In 2021, the largest area was also occupied by agricultural land - 54.6 percent and forest areas - 33.13. Urban areas accounted for 4.62 percent, BTA reports.
