Court: Traffic in the centre of Sofia unlawfully reorganised

The Supreme Administrative Court has ruled that Sofia City Hall must terminate the new traffic organisation in the centre of Sofia. The large-scale reorganisation around the National Palace of Culture was implemented unexpectedly and without prior notice during the days around Easter. The reorganisation included the construction of new cycle and bus lanes which, according to the municipality, were intended to ease traffic but instead caused chaos.

The court based its decision on the lack of an up-to-date citywide master plan for traffic organisation on which to base the changes. The last such plan expired in 2017. Sofia's previous mayor, Yordanka Fandakova of GERB, served from 2009 until November 2023, when Vasil Terziev of PP-DB (Save Sofia) took office.
